Session 1: Steve Martin (President/CEO, NEI) – “The Power of Trust”
The word “Trust” is a construct– a label that is interpreted by people in many different ways. To improve communication and advance training efficiencies it is important to 1) operationalize this construct to clarify meaning, and 2) develop strategies for building trusting relationships with the animals in our care. This presentation will offer clarification on what “Trust” looks like in an animal’s behavior and how to establish trusting relationships with animals.
Session 2: Marty MacPhee (Animal Behavior and Guest Experience Consultant) – “Building Your Toolkit for Team Trust”
The success of our human relationships on our teams can directly affect the animals that we serve. This presentation will explore how a foundation of trust plays a critical role in our animal care programs. Shared expectations facilitate a teamwide clarity of purpose, problem solving, original thinking, resilience building, and inspire members to embrace conflict. While there are endless possibilities for building trust within a team, I will share some of my favorite off-the-shelf resources and self-assessments to help you and your team build your own personal tool kit to inspire trust.
Session 3: NEI TEC in Conversation – Steve Martin, Marty MacPhee, Chris Jenkins (COO, NEI), Ari Bailey (Show Manager, NEI)
A panel of NEI TEC faculty members gather to have a conversation about their thoughts on the presentations and questions from the previous two sessions, as well as best practices in animal training, mentorship, and anything else from wherever the conversation leads them!
